Philanthropist and Afrobeats King Davido has delivered on his promise to donate 300 million Naira to orphanages in his home country, Nigeria.

On Tuesday, he announced it on his X (Twitter) handle and subsequently posted a screenshot of the disbursement on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

“I and my foundation pledge the sum of 300 million Naira to orphanages around Nigeria…as my yearly contribution to the nation…details of disbursement tomorrow,” he wrote on Tuesday.

Some of his followers have commended the effort, while others thought he was reaching out to the orphanages just to show off.

“People give to the homeless each day; it reached your turn and you want to make everybody know. You no dey do am from your mind. Just for validation,” one of his critics wrote.

“Although I feel Davido likes to show too much, this is a commendable gesture. You are giving to the needy and that really counts. However it takes nothing away from others who are quiet about their giving. No cameras, no ring lights, no social media, just legit giving without noise. I think that is the truest form of philanthropy,” another added.

Three hundred million Naira is equivalent to $197,000. It is, however, not clear how the sum would be disbursed to the various orphanages in the country.

Apart from music, Davido is admired by many fans for his compassion and support for the needy. He has embarked on similar donations to other individuals and orphanages in the past.

Last week, he announced an investment in a new social media platform called Chatter in the United States. The platform is “founded on inclusivity & free speech, with unmatched Creator tools & monetization,” and is said to have over 3,000 creators. The singer has asked his followers to sign onto the platform but did not disclose the amount pushed into setting up the platform, which aims to provide users an enhanced audio-visual experience.
