The BRIT Awards 2024 will take off in barely 24 hours. Ahead of the main show, British singer Raye has been announced as Songwriter of the Year.

Rachel Agatha Keen, the 26-year-old, secured seven nominations, breaking BRIT’s record for the highest number of nominations by a single artist in one year.

Apart from winning Songwriter of the Year, she is also competing in the Artist of the Year and Album of the Year categories.

The prestigious songwriter award, according to BRITS, was introduced in 2022 to celebrate exceptional songwriting talent, decided by a select panel of expert judges. English singers, Ed Sheeran and Kid Harpoon were named as previous recipients of the award.

Raye will perform at the main ceremony with several artistes billed for the show, including Calm Down hitmaker Rema. Raye said she would treasure the trophy, which is her first BRIT award.

“I am so grateful to be recognised as a songwriter as this is a craft I am so passionate about and have been since I started my journey as a musician, and I’m very grateful to those who voted for me to have this award,” she stated.

The songstress has several records to her credit, including the 2019, singles Love Me Again, and others like Please Don’t Touch and two David Guetta collaborations, Stay (Don’t Go Away) and Make It to Heaven.

Her debut album, My 21st Century Blues, is said to have “made an immediate impact,” reaching the No. 2 spot on the UK albums chart.

Damian Christian, Managing Director and President of Promotions at Atlantic Records and Chair of the BRIT Committee for 2024, congratulated Raye and described her as “a prominent and respected songwriter.”

Contenders for Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best New Artist, and Song of the Year International Artist of the Year will be announced for the main celebration on Saturday. Rema, Burna Boy, and Asake are listed in the International Artist of the Year category.

The award, with MasterCard as the headline partner, cuts across genres such as Alternative/Rock, Dance, Hip Hop/Grime/Rap, Pop and R&B, and others.
