For some strange reason, a significant portion of Afrobeat’s songs that have graced the global stage have been about love, passion, and heartbreak.

Love and romance are two topics that are part of everyday life – for grownups though – and are very relatable when one’s emotions are stirred.

As a result, many Afrobeats musicians ride the wave to drive home their point as they theme most of their songs around love and pain (heartbreak).

When any artiste is focused on pursuing wealth and success, a few seconds can be set aside to discuss love and the joy it offers. Emotions are at the heart of Afrobeats, opening up connected issues of romance and relationships.

Nigerian icon 2Baba’s African Queen and other emotion-evoking songs have long been the standard for any playlist with a love theme.

Recent songs like Davido’s Aye, Runtown’s Mad Over You, and Becca’s You Lied to Me ft. Kwabena Kwabena are all ‘love jams’ that deserve a place on this type of playlist.

A few new love and heartbreak-themed songs have emerged that take you on a journey through a sea of emotions. These songs are guaranteed to create the scene for the celebration and serve as a gentle reminder of why love is such a wonderful emotion, and heartbreak, not so much of an emotion to yearn.

Here are some songs about heartbreak to get you through your own feelings and remind you of lost love.

Fireboy DML: Like I Do

The romantic side of the soft-spoken singer was on display in Nigerian star Fireboy DML’s Like I Do. The song passionately and intensely declares that no one can treat his sweetheart better than he can. Fireboy declares his enduring love for his significant other as the song comes to a close.

Burna Boy: Last Last

Last Last, is a song for you if your once-sweet relationship went sour and eventually sank to the bottom of the ocean. Burna Boy throws light on the fact that sometimes, “nothing good lasts forever”.

YKB: San Siro

Oluwo Yusuf, known professionally as YKB, expresses his thoughts for that special someone in San Siro, which was released in 2022. By appealing to his companion and telling her that he will do anything to prove his love, YKB uses his delicate voice to compliment his ‘lover-boy’ charm.

Pheelz: Stand By You

The song Stand By You by Pheelz is a comforting, reassuring track. The singer makes it apparent that he would make his love the first priority considering his past emotional suffering and ultimately confesses his devotion to his lady while floating over a backdrop of piano melodies and gentle percussion. The song has a hint of melancholy but is sure to make people cry.

Tiwa Savage: Somebody’s Son

The song promises that someone will one day discover you and love you as you deserve. This song was written with the desire to be in a relationship if you are single.
