MOBO Awards: Nicki Minaj, Asake, Ayra Starr Others Secure Nominations

Talking of awards, the organisers of the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards have announced nominees for the ceremony scheduled for February next year. Artiste across 20 categories, including some Afrobeats finest have all been named.

MOBO is the UK’s biggest and most prestigious celebration of black music and culture. The 26th edition will take place at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, UK.

Afrobeats talents like Adekunle Gold, Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy and Davido, have all been nominated in the Best African Act category. Besides music, MOBO will also honour outstanding media personalities amidst live music performances.

For the Best International Act (US) category, names like Doja Cat, Drake & 21 Savage, Travis Scott, Ice Spice, Latto, Lil Uzi Vert, Nicki Minaj, Sexyy Red, Sza, Victoria Monet, have come up strongly.

The organisers have also introduced the MOBO Impact and MOBO Pioneer Awards. This year’s nominations is described as having strong representation from female artists and groups who are competing in categories including Album of the Year, Song of the Year (supported by BBC Radio 1xtra), Best Newcomer, and more.

The eligibility period for the 2024 MOBO Awards is from September 1st, 2022, to September 31st, 2023.

MOBO’s 25-year legacy is said to have played “a pivotal role in supporting the growth of British black music on a global scale, championing homegrown talent, and setting the standard in Rap, Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul, Grime, Drill, Gospel, Jazz, Reggae, Garage, Drum & Bass, and beyond.”

Some new artistes like Tyla, Rema, and Ayra Starr have also been tipped for special awards for their remarkable progress in the past year.
