Columbian music star, Karol G, paid tribute to women who paved the way for her in the industry when she picked up the award for Woman of the Year at the Billboard Latin Women in Music ceremony held at the weekend.

She described the “last couple of years” of her music journey as “the most beautiful”, saying it felt like she was “harvesting the many things sown” in her life.

“…I feel very grateful for this recognition. I feel very honored for what it means, and for the responsibility behind it as well. I want to infinitely thank all the women who have made it possible for me to receive this [award] tonight — I believe that it is not only my work but the work of all the women who are part of what I do,” she stated.

The 33-year-old said the ceremony was “a beautiful way” to celebrate the hard work, dedication, commitment, and discipline of women in music, and encouraged her compatriots to continue believing in their dreams.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards acknowledged rising talents and young executives “overseeing the careers of artists who are entering the Billboard charts for the first time.”

It was instituted following the growth of Latin music in the United States and its contribution to domestic revenue.

Karol G is said to be the first woman, and second artist ever, to top the Billboard 200 with an all-Spanish-language album titled Mañana Será Bonito, which also became the fifth-most-streamed album on Spotify in 2023.

In addition to other accomplishments on the Billboard Charts, she also won Urban Album and Album of the Year at the Latin Grammy Awards in November, the first woman to have won that category.

The Billboard Latin Women in Music award ceremony aired on Sunday, June 9, 2024, on Telemundo. Personalities include Ana Bárbara, Ángela Aguilar, Camila Cabello, Gloria Estefan, Kany García, Kali Uchis, and La India in various categories.

Karol G’s father, who was at the ceremony, also expressed appreciation to individuals who continued to support her daughter’s career.

“Today we’re here receiving this great recognition as Woman of the Year…I’m very happy to be surrounded by so many stars, so many legends, and so many talented women who today are sweeping the world of music. Thanks to each one of you, to the fans, to the great team, it’s because of them we are celebrating this beautiful day,” he stated.
