A third season of the comedy series Rap Sh!t, which stars Issa Rae has been cancelled, according to Max.

One month before the decision, the show’s Season 2 finale made its premiere on the streaming service.

On January 18, Issa Rae responded to the streaming service’s decision with a statement to Variety.

Rae noted, “I’m really proud of and appreciative of [showrunner] Syreeta [Singleton], our cast, writers, and crew that made this show possible. Many thanks to the fans who tune in weekly to cheer on our girls, and thanks to Sarah Aubrey and Suzanna Makkos for supporting the show.”

Rae’s creation, Rap Sh!t, made its debut in 2022. The show followed the tale of two former friends who got back together to start a rap group.

Despite the show’s fantastic reviews, Rap Sh!t was canceled despite the praise from critics. After canceling two other popular shows this month, Julia and Our Flag Means Death, MAX decided to cancel the scripted series as well.

MAX did not provide a public explanation for why Rap Sh!t was canceled. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a representative for the streaming service owned by Warner Bros. Discovery rather praised the program.

Rap Sh!t is a unique comedy with compelling social commentary that reached viewers in a way only Issa’s talents can accomplish,” the spokesperson said.

“We are incredibly grateful to Issa Rae for creating it. Many thanks to Issa, showrunner Syreeta Singleton, and the teams at Hoorae and 3 Arts Entertainment for presenting Shawna and Mia to us. Fans have been engrossed in Shawna and Mia’s journey and have supported them through thick and thin. We wouldn’t have it any other way, and we’ll never be able to get Seduce and Scheme out of our heads.”

November 2023 saw the release of Rap Sh!t’s second and final season on MAX. The release date was originally scheduled for August 2023, but the Hollywood strikes caused a delay.
