Two of Africa’s Afrobeats giants, Burna Boy and Davido have secured three nominations each ahead of the 66th Grammy Awards, which comes off in February next year.

Burna Boy and Davido are head-to-head in the Best Global Music Performance, Best African Music Performance, and Best Global Music Album categories.

The  Recording Academy put out a tall list of nominees in various music categories on Friday, November 10, 2023.

Burna Boy’s Alone and Davido’s Feel are battling for the Best Global Music Performance. Unavailable and City Boys were named in the Best African Performance category, while I Told Them and Timeless are being considered for the Best Global Music Album.

Apart from these top two, Amapiano by Asake & Olamide; Rush by Ayra Starr, and the recently trending Water by Tyla have also made it into the Best African Performance Category.

The final round of voting will take place from December 14, 2023, to January 4, 2024, before the winners will be announced on February 4, 2023.

The ceremony, set to take place at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, will be telecast live on CBS Television Network and will stream on Paramount+.

Best African Music Performance is one of the three new categories included in the 2024 Grammys. The other two categories are Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.

According to Recording Academy CEO, Harvey Mason Jr, the update is aimed at making the Grammy Awards process “more fair, transparent, and accurate.”

Davido, nominated for the first time, expressed excitement about the feat on his X page (Twitter) on Friday, saying, “Delay is not denial.”

Burnaboy is currently on his I Told Them Tour in the United States and Canada.

Tyla has been making waves with the release of her viral single Water since it was unveiled in July this year. The South African music star debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 after trending for several weeks on TikTok.

Nigeria’s Ayra Starr has also been on an impressive run this year, dropping back-to-back hits while collaborating with other artistes.

Both female performers (Starr and Tyla) have secured their first Grammy nominations ever and may be looking forward to doing more in the years ahead.

Same applies to Davido, who has won many international awards throughout his career except the Grammys.

Burna Boy, a three-time nominee at the Grammys would be hoping things change next year, as he has been listed again in all the categories announced on Friday.

“Ayra Grammy nominated Starr !!! It’s only you Jesus, only you !” Ayra Starr the Sability hitmaker wrote on her X (Twitter) after the announcement.

Fans have congratulated the nominees and are looking forward to wholesome news when the final results are announced on February 4, 2024.
