Streaming company Hulu is set to adapt Atlanta’s arguably most popular street party widely known as Freaknik for the big screen.

The streamer revealed the original documentary, Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told which would detail the rise and fall of the infamous event.

The project’s synopsis asks, “Can the magic of Freaknik be brought back 40 years later?” as it “recounts the rise and fall of a small Atlanta HBCU picnic that exploded into an influential street party and spotlighted ATL as a major cultural stage.”

Showrunner Geraldine L. Porras, director P. Frank Williams, Melissa Cooper for Mass Appeal, Eric Tomosunas for Swirl Films, Terry Ross, Alex Avant, Luther Campbell, Peter Bittenbender, and Melissa Cooper are among the executive producers while Jay Allen and Nikki Byles are the project’s producers.

Freaknik began as a small spring break picnic for students from nearby historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the mid-1980s in Atlanta.

The festival had grown beyond its modest beginnings by the 1990s. It developed into what people now remember the event for – dancing competitions, job fairs, rap sessions, concerts, parties, and more.

The Atlanta Committee for Black College Spring Break was told in 1998 by the Associated Press that the event should no longer be welcomed due to “sexual assaults, violence against women, and public safety concerns.”

However, there are still many attempts to revive the frenzy in recent times.
