Dave Chappelle, the renowned American comedian, hosted a show in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

Punchline Comedy, the show’s organizers, announced on Instagram that the highly anticipated performance had sold out in less than two hours.

Given that this was Chappelle’s first performance in Kenya, it served as an instant validation of his notoriety and the fervor around his act.

Chappelle has always strongly supported the no-phone policy therefore the show’s organizers stated that no recording devices, cameras, or cellphones would be allowed inside.

Nonetheless, visitors will be permitted to use or access their phones in specified places if necessary.

“Anyone found in the arena using a cell phone will be kicked out right away”. The statement added, “We value your collaboration in ensuring a phone-free watching experience”.

Part of a Punchline Comedy Club post states, “All phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr pouches upon arrival and unlocked at the end of the show.”

Similar to the event that will take place in Nairobi, this rule has been in effect for several of the well-known comedian’s performances.

The Louis Leakey Auditorium hosted the event, which featured performances by several local Kenyan artists. Gates opened at 7:00 p.m. Eastern African time.

Punchline Comedy Club Nairobi says in part of one of their posts, “Punchline Comedy Club Nairobi Presents. For one incredible night of standup comedy, Dave Chappelle, the G.O.A.T., will be performing live and loud in Nairobi, Kenya.”

In addition to being a well-known comedian, Dave Chappelle has been vocal about his opinions for a while.

During a stand-up gig in the Middle East, he accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

The fifty-year-old comedian has had some of his comments seen as an online outburst, which may have contributed to his regulations of “no phone” during his shows.
