Hip-hop mogul Dame Dash has opened up about why he declined to produce the Snoop Dogg-led film Soul Plane, which he deemed as racist and stereotypical.

In an interview with Math Hoffa on his podcast My Expert Opinion, Dash said he was offered the opportunity to work on the 2004 comedy, but he turned it down because he felt it was disrespectful to the black community.

“They had asked me to produce Soul Plane and I got offended because I don’t like white people making money off making fun of us,” Dash said.

Soul Plane movie divided opinions

Soul Plane, which also starred Kevin Hart in his first lead role, was a parody of the 1980 disaster film Airplane!. It featured a predominantly black cast of rappers and comedians, such as Snoop Dogg, Method Man, Lil Jon, the Ying Yang Twins, D.L. Hughley, Mo’Nique, and Katt Williams.

The film received negative reviews from critics, who criticized its crude humor, lowbrow jokes, and racial stereotypes. It also performed poorly at the box office.

However, despite its initial failure, Soul Plane has gained a cult following over the years, especially among fans of Snoop Dogg and Kevin Hart. Some of the cast members have also defended the film, saying it was meant to be a satire and a celebration of black culture.

Dash, however, said he has no regrets about passing on Soul Plane, as he preferred to focus on more meaningful and impactful projects.

Dash also expressed his disappointment with Hart, who he said he discovered and cast in his first movie, Paper Soldiers, in 2002. He accused the comedian of not showing him enough gratitude or support for his projects.
