The 2023 Global Citizen Festival set to take place in Rwanda will feature Kendrick Lamar as the headline performer. The event, dubbed “Move Afrika: Rwanda,” will happen on December 6 at Kigali’s BK Arena.

This festival is the first in a planned series of larger touring events that will take place throughout Africa in the upcoming years.

Lamar isn’t just the main attraction here; until 2028, he and Dave Free’s pgLang company will collaborate with Global Citizen to curate Move Afrika: Rwanda and other Move Afrika events.

The festival has previously been held in Accra, Ghana; Lagos, Nigeria; and Johannesburg, South Africa.

“Africa is driving culture and creativity globally, but the continent has been left out of the global music touring circuit for too long,” Hugh Evans, CEO and co-founder of Global Citizen said in a statement during the launch.

Move Afrika will pioneer a world-class touring circuit and drive transformative investments across Africa by transitioning from one-off events to a consistent annual tour. Move Afrika will create new economic opportunities for Africa’s rapidly growing youth population in the entertainment industry and open doors for many artistes to tour the continent.

The Global Citizen Experience aims to generate investment interests within local communities, engage local artistes, vendors, crews, and agencies, and foster job and entrepreneurial opportunities across Africa.

The organizers also hope to increase public awareness of social issues affecting Africa. These include addressing the financial implications of climate change on food availability, fostering civic engagement, helping the younger generation find work, and finding money for health, especially for women.
