News came in early this week about the passing of South African gospel singer Eric Pheli Moyo, who died at a hospital after collapsing on stage.
The 41-year-old, who was part of the gospel choir Joyous Celebration, reportedly passed out at a performance due to a stroke. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.
Fans and members of the choir have been mourning the South African-born Zimbabwean who “delivered unforgettable performances until his unfortunate death” on December 20, 2023.
“From 2014 to date, Eric has been loyal to the brand; he has served the kingdom wholeheartedly, with all his might and power.
“We will forever cherish the moments we shared with Him; it gives us great pleasure to fully Dedicate this weekend In Bloemfontein to you, Eric.
“You would have wanted this to happen; even in our last conversations, you did say to us that I’ll see you guys in Bloemfontein,” Joyous Celebration said in a Facebook post.
The group is hosting a memorial in honour of the singer on Sunday, December 24, 2023. It also dedicated its Hope and Victory concert in Bloemfontein to young talent.
Eric Moyo was the first winner of Idols East Africa, a version of the Idol series. He was discovered by Lindelani Mkize in 2014.
“As a tenor singer, Eric brought joy to many through his electric performances and unique songs. A snazzy dresser of note. His stage presence was unmatched,” Joyous Celebration said in a statement.
“His passing will leave a deep void in the Joyous family, and his legacy will live through his music, which touched the lives of many and made significant contributions to the gospel music genre.
“While we mourn his passing, let’s celebrate his life and the impact he had on those around him. Eric may no longer be with us, but his spirit will live on through the beautiful music he created. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” it added.
Eric Moyo’s death follows that of 30-year-old Brazilian gospel singer Pedro Henrique, who also reportedly suffered a heart attack during a live performance, passed away on December 13, 2023. 34-year-old inspiring singer Zahara also passed away recently after a long illness.
