The impending opening of a waterpark at Lake Lanier in Georgia this summer has been met with mixed reactions, with people reflecting on the unsettling stories connected to the lake’s history.

Nestled beneath the waters of Lake Lanier is the forgotten town of Oscarville, not many are aware of the terrifying past hidden beneath the surface of this idyllic weekend retreat, which is well-known for its boating and fishing.

History and stats have it that over 210 people have perished at Lake Lanier as a result of numerous incidents, including boating mishaps, drownings, and injuries, according to a report from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

According to online sources, a ceremony was held at the waterpark on Wednesday to start construction on the new ride.

When Fins Up Water Park opens at Margaritaville at Lake Lanier Islands on May 4, it will have the state’s first waterslide coaster, Apocalypso.

“With this enormous investment, Margaritaville at Lanier Islands will see its largest expansion in decades, with Georgia’s largest waterslide complex joining the water park and boasting an amazing 15 slides overall in 2024,” park officials said in a statement.

Additionally, the attraction will have the biggest “blasterango drop” in the country, which will allow riders to travel up and down hills at an average speed of 30 mph, according to WSB-TV.

Due to its contentious past, word of the new waterpark at Lake Lanier has spread on X leading some users to wonder if it is really in the best interests of Georgians. Below are a few reactions and comments:

“A water slide? The disrespect is heartbreaking. Does #Oscarville meet the qualifications to be deemed a historical site so that #LakeLanier can be drained?”
